The Miller Place-Mount Sinai Historical Society is a non-profit organization located in the Town of Brookhaven, New York. The society's mission is to promote and encourage historical research, and to share this knowledge to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the rich history of Miller Place and Mount Sinai.
The society oversees two historic properties: The William Miller House and The Daniel Hawkins House. The William Miller House, built in 1720, is a living museum and the heart of the society's educational activities. It offers a window into early Long Island life and is listed on the New York State Register of Historic Places.
The Daniel Hawkins House, built in 1810, is currently undergoing restoration and will serve as an archival library and exhibition space. This will allow the William Miller House to focus on being a living museum. The society is guided by a dedicated Board of Trustees committed to preserving the architectural and historical treasures of Miller Place and Mount Sinai.
The society offers tours of The William Miller House, which are available by appointment and on Saturdays from June through September. The society also offers an internship program for high school and college students, which combines learning, leadership, and community engagement. The internship provides opportunities to develop and execute museum programming, educational outreach, and preservation and conservation work.
The Miller Place-Mount Sinai Historical Society relies on the passion and support of volunteers, donors, and community members to preserve the stories and structures of the past. The society's headquarters is located at 75 North Country Road, Miller Place, NY, and can be contacted through their website or by phone at (631) 476-5742.
